Study suggests yoga can benefit stroke patients

These days, a broad spectrum of individuals opt to don their yoga clothing and get stuck into the activity. From older people attempting to preserve their mobility to glamorous celebrities, there is no shortage of interest in the discipline.
New research may help attract even more individuals to the activity. According to a study conducted by a team at Indiana University, stroke victims may benefit from wearing yoga clothes and engaging in the pursuit.
The study involved 19 men and one woman, with an average age of 66. Over a period of eight weeks, they participated in twice-weekly hour-long group classes taught by a yoga therapist.
In order to ensure the sessions were suitable for the people involved, they were dramatically modified.
According to those behind the research, participants gained in confidence and their abilities to balance were also boosted.
Arlene Schmid, assistant professor of occupational therapy in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, said: “They enjoyed it so much partly because they weren’t getting any other treatment. They had already completed their rehabilitation but felt there still was room for improvement.”
She also noted that it was interesting to see how much men liked the activities.
