Garden rooms are fast replacing old fashioned conservatories as the point where the home and the garden conjoin. When John and Pat Ball of Keswick in Cumbria retired they saw the garden room as a viable and preferable alternative to a conservatory. ‘We’ve always been keen gardeners and loved being in the garden’ John says ‘I’d always planned to have a conservatory added to the house, but instead we’ve effectively had a free-standing lounge built in our garden. It’s a much more modern and comfortable place than a rickety conservatory, but still allows us to enjoy the garden as we sit reading, or watching TV’.
‘I do have to laugh’ Pat adds ‘I always thought of conservatories as being such an old person’s thing. And we don’t think of ourselves as old people’.
Forget out-dated notions of flimsy and musty garden buildings, contemporary garden rooms are solid, comfortable and airy. Not only that, but they can be constructed from sustainable materials – so now you can relax in your preferred environment while helping to preserve it.
‘We’ve always been more outdoorsy people’ John continues ‘we don’t just love our garden, but we love walking, wildlife and the countryside. These things are important to us; Pat has been a keen conservationist since our younger days. We like to know that anything we buy is environmentally responsible where possible and that was a factor we took very seriously when choosing who would provide us with our garden room’.
But the garden doesn’t just look great from inside their garden room, the small structure itself is both stylish and innocuous; blending into John and Pat’s garden as well as adding to it.
‘A lot of garden buildings look bloody awful’ John smiles ‘we wanted one that wasn’t just a place we could sit in and watch the outdoors, but one that didn’t ruin the beauty of our garden from the outside’.
