A courier service with a difference

Many organisations rely on courier services to deliver items on their behalf and to bring goods to them. Indeed, without such assistance, a considerable number of firms would not be able to function properly.

Hospitals are no exception to this and some of the deliveries they require can be costly. For example, if they need the help of parcel couriers on an out-of-hours basis, they can end up shelling out large sums of money.

However, a group of people from Norfolk are determined to help out local healthcare centres. The individuals have set up a new branch of biking service the Emergency Rider Volunteers Norfolk (SERV). The volunteers transport important resources, such as blood and plasma.

The branch is part of the national SERV organisation and it is serving the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Meanwhile, the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and the James Paget Hospital will also benefit once the service is rolled out further.

Commenting on the motivation behind the initiative, county secretary David Parish said: “At the moment, if medics need blood or plasma out of hours, they have to rely on couriers from the private sector or taxis… What we want to do is provide a free service which will allow the NHS to divert the money they save into patient care. Essentially, we want to give something back.”

He added that the main advantage of using bikes to provide the courier services is to ensure more predictable deliveries, noting that bikes are not as affected by traffic jams.

Mr Parish went on to remark: “I think we are all very aware of the fact that it might be us that needs help from the NHS one day, and this is our way of saying thank you.”

Over coming months, demand for parcel couriers may rise. The run-up to the festive season is generally a busy time for shoppers and firms alike as people prepare for the celebrations.
