Diamond engagement rings have a long and interesting history and can be found in many cultures around the world.
Betrothal
Before the term ‘engagement’ was used many cultures had betrothal rings (marriage rings). In ancient Britain and many parts of Western Europe these were simple plaited bands that were worn by women to show that they were no longer available for courtship. The plaited bands were replaced each year of the betrothal.
In the Roman Empire potential brides would wear betrothal rings made from iron. At this time iron symbolised the strength and longevity of marriage.
In ancient China the betrothal period was just as serious as marriage itself. Gifts were exchange at this time and the two families were united. If the either parties were to die during this period then the remaining person would be consider to be widowed.
In Renaissance Europe betrothal rings began to be worn by the potential husband as well as the bride-to-be. These were known as ‘gimmel’ rings.
The main gimmel ring design was made in three sections. The bride, groom and a witness would each wear a part of the ring. These were then brought together on the day of the marriage and worn from then on by the bride.
The solitaire diamond engagement rings we know so well today first started to emerge in the 15th century
During this period many wealthy Western Europeans began to add expensive gemstones to their wedding rings.
At this time diamonds were highly sought after for their clarity and brilliance. Diamonds were also considered to be a symbol of longevity and became closely linked to the enduring pact of marriage.
By the 17th century people began to wear separate rings for the betrothal period and the marriage.
Diamonds were a popular choice for these newly emerging engagement rings.
At this time diamond engagement rings were typically small clusters of round or rose-cut stones set into gold rings.
In the 19th century large deposits of diamonds were being discovered in South Africa. This made diamonds far more available and so more and more engaged couples began to invest in diamond engagement rings.
In modern times diamond engagement rings are the standard many couples aim for when planning on marriage.
There is nothing more traditional than diamond engagement rings . These are some of the most desirable forms of jewellery on the market and many people dream for years about what type of diamond rings they would like.
