It can be hard to judge exactly how much you should feed your pet. After all, many will happily keep eating until they are ready to throw it all back up again, whilst other pets may be extremely fussy and turn their noses up and almost everything you put in front of them.
Many pet foods will offer a guide as to how much you should feed your pet. However, each animal will be totally individual and therefore these guides should be used as just that – an estimation that should be altered depending on your own kitten or dog’s individual habits and needs.
For example, if your kitten, cat or dog seems to be gaining or losing a lot of weight, you should obviously adjust the amount you feed them accordingly, ensuring that your give them as much as they need to be healthy and vital.
Whilst it may seem that fussy pets will gain weight if you give them treats, this can be very counterproductive. The right pet food will be high in the right type of cat or dog nutrition, whereas treats will simply be high in salt, sugar and fat. Instead, try to only leave food out for a certain length of time. This will often make them realise they need to eat the food you give them when you give them it.
When it comes to cat or dog nutrition, there will not be one solution as to how much you should feed them. Their size, age and how active they are will dictate just how much food they should consume and the best way to know for sure is to keep an eye on them and ensure they remain a healthy weight.
There are also certain pet foods that are designed for animals of different ages and even sizes and feeding your pet these may give you an added extra ability to judge exactly how much they need.
