Jeans for men have been around for over 150 years. Originally, they were made solely as work trousers. Over time men wore them outside of work at first only after work to go to the bar or pub. Then as a fashion statement, which is where we are today.
They are an item of clothing that are still perceived to be largely worn by the young, but can actually be found in the wardrobe of men in their 70s. They are an iconic item of clothing that has continued to evolve and change to meet the needs of each generation.
A Brief History of Jeans For Men
Legend has it that, the German, Levis Strauss was the man that came up with jeans for men. In fact, it was a Latvian tailor, called Jacob Davis, who came up with the design in 1872. He ran his own tailors shop in Reno, Nevada and invented a set of work trousers made from hardwearing duck cotton (canvas) and later denim. To protect the seams and make the trousers last he added metal studs to the tops of the pockets. This prevented them being ripped, which was a common problem with work overalls.
However, he needed help to market and distribute them, so he turned to Levis Strauss who bought some of his cloth for his dry goods stores. The rest as they say is history. The first Levis Strauss work jeans were sold in 1873.
Modern Jeans For Men
For decades jeans remained primarily as work gear. They were worn for work around the house and popping into town, but that was about it. However, all that changed when James Dean wore blue jeans in the film the 1955 film Rebel Without a Cause. They became a symbol of youth rebellion, which is when their life as a fashion item actually began.
Today, jeans for men come in an amazing array of styles and colours. The styling changes constantly, currently skinny jeans are in. This style of jean was originally worn by country singers in the 1950s, but it was Elvis Presley who made them mainstream.
